Down By Law
I am not sure how I stumbled onto Down By Law but I was so happy I that I did. Down By Law is a film by Jim Jarmusch, and was recently released as a part of the Criterion Collection.
Down By Law is a movie about 3 strange characters who wind up getting locked away in a New Orleans. 2 were framed and one committed an unlikely murder. Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni play the 3 felons.
About 1/4 of the movie is the background of these guys and you do not really understand what is going on. The next part it will all makes sense and the interaction between the characters is brilliant. It really shows some development between the characters, as well as the effect of the prison on them. The rest of the movie is their adventures after they escape the prison.
The movie is shot in black and white and was recently transferred to DVD for widescreen TVs. It looks beautiful, and you cannot really tell what year it was filmed in.
There are a ton of extras on the movie, including a great interview with Jim Jarmusch about 25 or more topics ranging from the location to the sound track. It is worth listening to just to hear about some of the tricks they played on Roberto Benigni, whose native language is not English.
I give Down By Law 5 stars.
I got this movie from Green Cine, it took 3 days to get here, and 2 days to get back.
Since I have watched this I have purchased 2 copies for gifts for friends, who both like good movies and love Tom Waits, so I think they will love this movie. As it turns out this is really a 2 disk edition with the second disk containing a bunch of interviews, a Tom Waits music video, out takes, and numerous other extras.
